The Toxic Avenger, a fun theatre experience
If you like green, crazed monsters (including a mayor), art and love stories then I have something for you. In the heart of Atlanta in Little Five Points, lies the Horizon Theatre which is just a block or so away from all of the action.
I always look for different experiences in Atlanta and this theatre did not disappoint. It is an intimate space where you will feel that you are part of the performance. I had the opportunity to see a play called, The Toxic Avenger, which is loosely based upon a movie called the The Toxic Avenger from the 1980s.
The Toxic Avenger, a fun theatre experience, takes place in the city of Tromaville in New Jersey. There is this great guy (Melvin) who does not like confrontation who of all things wants to do something about the waste and pollution in his town. To do so he would have to expose a shady no good mayor who eventually finds out about his plan, but let me back up some.
He befriends a beautiful blind woman (Sarah), who is the one who gives him the information he uses to try to get the mayor to get her act together or risk having her secret exposed.
Meanwhile, the mayor, still not forgetting about little Melvin’s threats sends her goons after him and they throw him into a barrel of green toxin. He emerged stronger, confrontational and a down right defender (but does it include death? You have to see the play to find out.)
Melvin, now Toxie, as he is affectionately known as by Sarah still seeks to stop the mayor, but after finding out that he survived begins an even more thorough pursuit to kill him.
After a few ups and downs, chases and confrontations of all types, all occurring in song and dance that makes you want to join in, Sarah and Melvin become a little closer together and by the end watch out!
This entire performance is done with 5 talented individuals whom you will see manage to make you believe it is more like 15 people in the play. They change costumes, voices and demeanor so quickly it makes your head spin. There are sexy songs and moves and there are a little grown-up words, so I suggest adults only on this one, but if you enjoy seeing an underdog become a superhero and maybe or maybe not defeat the evildoers, you will want to see this play. The Toxic Avenger will be showing until March 13, 2016 and there are several showings a day so make it an outing in the area that never sleeps:)
Here is a snippet, so you can see what I am talking about:
Does Toxie die or does he go on to live a wonderful and productive life? You tell me. You have until March 13th to find out.
Ticket was given to me in exchange for my honest review.
